What Do I Do When I Am Ready To Get Help?

Admitting that you need help requires a lot of bravery. Seeking help in order to understand the cause of your anxiety is the first step that will lead you to the path of recovery. Individuals who seek treatment vary in treatment needs and goals. The best way to treat an anxiety disorder is to become informed about the various treatment options and find the ones that are right for you. It’s important for a therapist to determine the causes of your fears and anxiety. Some common types of anxiety therapies include cognitive, behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, humanistic, psychodynamic or a combination of therapeutic approaches. Therapy can help individuals, couples, families or groups. There are many different styles of therapy, and I will work with my client to choose the type that best addresses his or her needs.

Seeking the right treatment will take time and commitment. It might feel overwhelming or frustratingly slow. This is normal. Recovery usually has its ups and downs. It will be important to be open to change and a little experimentation.

Don’t rely on medications alone. Although medication can relieve the symptoms of anxiety, they will not cure anxiety disorders. Medication can be combined with psychotherapy for specific anxiety disorders and this may be the best treatment approach for some people. Be aware that some medications are effective only if clients take them regularly. Ceasing medication might cause symptoms to reoccur.

Get social support. The more you develop your social connections, the more protected you are from the depression that can often result from fear and anxiety. If you are feeling stuck, don’t hesitate to talk to trusted family members or friends or seek out new connections from a depression or anxiety support group. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness and it won’t mean you’re a burden to others. Often, the simple act of talking to someone face-to-face can be an enormous help.
